NOTICE TO THE READER The text of the pages in the German note-books, which are transcribed in this pamphlet, is generally simple and clear and we have taken the greatest care to give an exact transla tion of it, so that the English may say nothing more and nothing less than the German. But to cut short any criticism which might tend to lay to our charge the offence of an intentionally distorted transla tion, we earnestly beg those of our readers who know German to read not only onr translation, but at the same time the original text itself. In English-speaking countries many readers are well enough acquainted with the German language to be able to prove for themselves and to attest to others lhe perfect sincerity and correctness of our trans lations. Moreover, in order that it may be apparent to every one that the discussion can bear on a few trifling points only, and that it leaves intact, as a whole, the picture of the German atroci ties, we take upon ourselves the following engagement : — as soon as English translations different from our own are pro posed to us, either by means of the press or by personal letters (provided that such letters are signed), we will have them printed, exactly as we receive them, on leaflets which shall be inserted in the copies of our pamphlet still to be distributed.
